The Red Sox did all their scoring with two outs in the second inning on Drew Sutton’s double, Jose Iglesias’ RBI single, a walk and Oscar Tejada’s two-run triple.
Bergesen gave up a leadoff single to Will Middlebrooks in the third, but got a double play with the next pitch and struck out Mark Wagner. He threw only five pitches in the inning, leaving his total at 46, including 31 strikes.
Mark Hendrickson has been warming in the bullpen and will work the top of the fourth.
Bergesen threw two scoreless innings in the first exhibition game against the Pirates in Bradenton. He wasn’t getting the same sink on his fastball today.
Joe Mahoney’s bloop single to center field in the bottom of the third inning has reduced Boston’s lead to 3-1. It came after J.J. Hardy reached on an error and Matt Wieters singled into right-center field.
