SARASOTA, Fla. – We’re still waiting for the Orioles to announce their fifth roster cut. Hint: It’s a pitcher.
Ryan Adams was reassigned earlier today to the minor league camp. A reminder that you’re optioned if you’re on the 40-man roster, and reassigned if you’re not included.
“You can tell why people think well of him offensively,” manager Buck Showalter said. “He’s got a chance to be able to do this up here. And he’s made some strides defensively. He’s in a good place.
You can tell why everybody thinks well of him.”
Brandon Snyder was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, where he won’t do much catching, according to Showalter.
“I think it was just something that was kind of a reminder for him, a way that he can impact a team, another thing that he brings when he comes up here. He’s going to play first base in Norfolk,” Showalter said.
“His hitting ability should dictate that he should be able to do well in Triple-A this year, and we’re hoping that happens.”
Josh Rupe remains in camp. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 11 2/3 innings, and Showalter said his best shot to make the team is in a long relief capacity.
“You look at his repertoire, he’s a four-pitch guy,” Showalter said. “He’s still very much in the mix with our bullpen.”
As I wrote earlier today, Derrek Lee and Brian Roberts are expected to play tomorrow in Port Charlotte.
“We’ll see how they are in the morning,” Showalter said. “It’s that time of year, I’m going to take most everybody over there tomorrow. They’re going to have to get fitted for gray pants.”
Lee and Roberts were expected to play in Monday’s minor league game in Sarasota, but they might be allowed to miss it.
“Probably not,” Showalter said. “I’d rather give them that day. Keep in mind they haven’t been playing, but they’ve been conditioning the whole nine yards forever, so I’d like to give them that day if they can. We’ll see how they feel. They might get through that game tomorrow and come in and say, ‘Hey I want to get some at-bats.’ It’s a moving target.
Koji Uehara threw on the side again today. Still no definite date for his return to game action.
