How are the bats supposed to heat up in these conditions?
The Orioles rank 24th in the majors with a .226 average. They’ve scored 46 runs, more than only four teams.
Manager Buck Showalter told reporters earlier today that he doesn’t have any immediate plans to juggle the lineup. He believes in track records and figures that players like Derrek Lee, Vladimir Guerrero, Luke Scott and Adam Jones will eventually go on a tear.
Lee is hitting .227 with only one homer and two RBIs. Guerrero is batting .260 with only one homer, four RBIs and a .600 OPS. Scott is hitting .217 with one RBI. Jones is batting .200. Matt Wieters, who’s not in today’s lineup after catching last night, is batting .194 with one homer and four RBIs.
Nick Markakis is better than his .244 average. Brian Roberts leads the team with three homers and is tied for the RBI lead with 10, but he’s hitting .235. Robert Andino and Jake Fox, both starting today, are a combined 0-for-17 with no RBIs.
A lot has been written about the rotation and the late-inning relief, but the offense also shoulders much of the blame for this five-game skid.
