The Orioles want to get Simon up to 12-15 pitches per inning, which they can manipulate in these games. The rules are flexible.

Simon could go through a six- to seven-week spring training before the Orioles remove him from the restricted list and return him to the 40-man roster.

“He’s progressing fine,” said John Stockstill, the Orioles’ director of player development. “We’ll get him stretched out each time a little more.”

Triple-A Norfolk left-hander Troy Patton, who had been on the seven-day disabled list with a strained left shoulder, is available in relief for tonight’s game. He’ll work in a long relief role before getting back into the Tides’ rotation.

Double-A Bowie first baseman Joe Mahoney, on the seven-day disabled list with a quad injury, ran yesterday and today and felt “close to 100 percent,” according to Stockstill. He’ll take off tomorrow and likely be available to play on Monday.

Mahoney was the organization’s minor league Player of the Year in 2010.
