Avery hit streak reaches 11 games in Baysox loss tonight

Xavier Avery, the center fielder for Double-A Bowie, needed all nine innings, but extended his hitting streak to 11 games tonight as the Baysox lost 8-3 at Harrisburg.
After going hitless heading until the last inning, Avery singled in the ninth to extend his streak, which began on May 18 against Richmond.
Avery is batting .425 (17-for-40) with six multi-hit games during the streak. His average for the season is now up to .262 in 48 games. The 21-year-old Avery was hitting just .222 a month ago. He hit .234 in 27 games with Bowie last year after batting .280 in 109 games with Single-A Frederick.
Ronnie Welty was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for Bowie. It’s his eighth homer of the year and fifth in 25 games this month.
Kipp Schutz had two hits and two RBIs in Frederick’s 6-3 win tonight at Salem. Sean Gleason picked up his 11th save, which leads the Carolina League. The Keys are now 27-21 and can complete a four-game sweep at Salem on Sunday.
After winning in 19 innings last night, the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds lost in a regulation nine innings tonight 5-3 to West Virginia when the Shorebirds gave up three runs in the top of the ninth.
Mike Flacco hit a two-run homer for Delmarva and Jonathan Schoop added a solo shot, his seventh of the year.
