Guthrie got a called strike on a 92 mph fastball before Smoak launched his eighth home run. Guthrie struck out Jack Cust to end the inning, giving him nine, but it didn’t matter.
Former Oriole Chris Ray has a chance to pick up the win.
Unless the Orioles fight back in the ninth, this loss will sting as much as any of them.

Brandon League picked up the save in Seattle’s 3-2 victory, which extended the Orioles’ losing streak to five games.
Afterward, manager Buck Showalter told MASN’s Gary Thorne that he already spoke to Luke Scott about the baserunning blunder in the fifth inning that produced an out at third base on Nolan Reimold’s looping single into left field.
“I have some strong personal feelings about it,” Showalter said, “but it doesn’t do any good to broadcast them.”
