Orioles manager Buck Showalter has Blake Davis back in the starting lineup tonight, at second base and batting ninth.
He was asked if he was starting Davis to get him right back on the field after his error Wednesday scored two runs in the 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh.
“That’s not the only reason. But yeah, it was (a reason to start him),” Showalter said. “I thought the young man has done a lot to get the opportunity.
Thought he had some good at bats in Pittsburgh too. He had a big at bat that moved some runners over. I don’t want that sitting with him too long either.
“At some point, you have to take advantage of your opportunities too. But, I thought it was in everybody’s best interest to have him play again tonight.”
Showalter was asked about how tough it is for a rookie player to deal with a play like that.
“There are a lot of things that happened in that game for us to make it not matter. But that’s going to happen up here. Every guy has had it happen to them. It that’s a challenge for any player, they get weeded out. It’s kind of cruel, but it’s tough to put it behind you if you don’t get the opportunity.”
Showalter said it still appears that pitcher Jake Arrieta’s next start will be Wednesday after he was pulled after five innings Monday in Pittsburgh with some right elbow discomfort.
“So far, so good. He should be fine for Wednesday. He already feels a lot better, I was told. We’ll err on the side of caution and give him a few extra days where we can.”
He said Arrieta is scheduled to throw a light bullpen today and will probably throw more tomorrow.
