SARASOTA – The Orioles made their first round of camp cuts this morning, optioning reliever Chayce McDermott to minor league camp and reassigning pitchers Jeisson Cabera, Keagan Gillies and Richard Guasch.
The camp roster is down to 69 players.
McDermott had two scoreless appearances before allowing three home runs on three pitches in his most recent outing. He’ll continue to work as a reliever, with a chance to return to the majors later in the summer.
Gillies (quadriceps) and Eeles (shoulder) were injured. Eeles collided with outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. in Lakeland.
Cabrera allowed four runs in 1 1/3 innings. Guasch made one appearance and didn’t permit a run in two-thirds of an inning.
Dylan Beavers is leading off today and playing right field for the Orioles against Team Netherlands.
Samuel Basallo is catching after collecting two hits and a walk Sunday against the Red Sox in Fort Myers. Jeremiah Jackson is making his first start at shortstop.
Taylor Ward (left field), Pete Alonso (first base) and Ryan Mountcastle (designated hitter) are slotted in the top half of the lineups.
Further down are third baseman Bryan Ramos and second baseman Aron Estrada.
Second baseman Jackson Holliday is making good progress following surgery to remove a broken right hamate bone, but he isn’t expected to play in a Grapefruit League game.
“We’re not banking on it,” said manager Craig Albernaz.
Weston Wilson will play some outfield later this week and also get reps at second base.
