SARASOTA – The Orioles optioned outfielder Reed Trimble to minor league camp this morning to reduce their roster to 66 players.
Trimble was 4-for-15 with a double and two RBIs.
The club put Trimble on the 40-man roster to protect him in the Rule 5 draft. He posted a .342 on-base percentage and .827 OPS last season in 90 games at four levels and has gone 61-for-61 in stolen base attempts in the minors.
“First year on the 40-man, get to see him play up close and personal,” manager Craig Albernaz said earlier today. “Obviously, there were injuries in the minor leagues, but to see him healthy and in camp, he has potential to be a real impact player.
“I think the way he plays defense at all three outfield spots, switch-hitter, manages the at-bat, has power, and then also he can steal bases. And he’s a smart baserunner. He was very impressive in camp and I’m looking forward to seeing his development progression.”
Colton Cowser is leading off again and playing center field today against the Blue Jays in Sarasota. Samuel Basallo is catching, Pete Alonso is at first base and Dylan Beavers is in right field. Ryan Mountcastle is the designated hitter.
Weston Wilson is playing second base, with Bryan Ramos at third.
Tyler Wells makes his first spring start today. He’s tossed five scoreless innings with one hit, no walks and eight strikeouts.
Outfielder Vance Honeycutt is an extra today from minor league camp. He’s 5-for-5 with four home runs and a walk.
Nestor German starts Monday against the Cardinals in Jupiter and Levi Wells starts Tuesday versus the Astros in West Palm.
Kyle Bradish threw on a back field, which is why is next start in an exhibition game is pushed back to later this week.
