Orioles still seem to have another decision to make in the infield

SARASOTA – The rotation plans for the Orioles seem to be lining up in front of us without any announcements beyond Opening Day starter Trevor Rogers.
Kyle Bradish starts tonight against the Red Sox in Sarasota, weather permitting, and is primed for Game 2 on March 28 at Camden Yards. Perhaps we can read something into Chris Bassitt taking the ball Tuesday afternoon against the Tigers in Lakeland.
The Oriole haven’t listed their starter for Wednesday afternoon against the Blue Jays in Dunedin, or for the split-squad Thursday afternoon against the Yankees in Tampa and the night game against the Pirates in Sarasota.
Shane Baz and Dean Kremer also are in the rotation, and the Orioles haven’t revealed their plans for Zach Eflin.
One or two bullpen spots appear to be open, and the club must settle on a utility infielder.
Blaze Alexander would have filled the role until pushed into starting duty with second baseman Jackson Holliday and third baseman Jordan Westburg headed to the injured list. He handled second last night.
Luis Vázquez was playing for Puerto Rico on the World Baseball Classic and is expected in camp today. He’s the defense-first candidate who’s appeared in only four Grapefruit League games.
Thairo Estrada began last night with only two hits in 22 at-bats. Jeremiah Jackson, who impressed the organization with his offensive approach and results last season, has received an extensive look at second base and is 5-for-23. He didn’t play for about a week due to a mild calf strain.
Bryan Ramos started at third base last night before rain forced the game’s cancellation in the top of the third inning. He was 7-for-25 after the Orioles brought him back to the organization with a Feb. 20 waiver claim.
“I’ve seen him in Cleveland when he was with Chicago,” said manager Craig Albernaz. “He had a monster series against us in ’24, so I’ve seen the flashes of his tools. In this camp, to kind of see him up close and personal, the talent is as advertised.
“And with any player, it’s all about consistency, right? And for him, it’s just being consistent both on defense and on offense, and that’s something that he’s been focusing on is just a consistency of everything, whether it be his approach at the plate and just a consistent pre-pitch, making himself in the right spot and in the right position to field the ball on defense. So he’s been making strides, and the tools stand out and the athleticism stands out with him. So he’s been a great surprise, as well.”
José Barrero played shortstop last night and was 3-for-28 with a double, two home runs, one walk and 11 strikeouts going into the game. He fanned again in his only at-bat, if it actually counts in a cancellation.
Weston Wilson, 31, showed off a strong arm at third base Saturday in Bradenton with accurate throws across the diamond that also had plenty of juice. He’s 6-for-21 with two doubles, a home run, seven walks and 11 strikeouts.
Every at-bat feels like it can make or break a player in these competitions, and Wilson was still annoyed yesterday by his 0-for-4 afternoon Saturday that included three strikeouts.
“I think the last couple games have been off a little bit swing-wise, but overall I feel like I’ve put together a good camp, shown versatility,” said Wilson, who made starts at first base, second, third, left field and right with the Phillies and also tossed four scoreless innings in emergency relief.
“I’d say for the majority I’ve put together good at-bats. The last couple games I’ve punched out a little more than I would like to, but working on some stuff and feel good. I feel like I’ve been able to show that I can play here, fit on the team, you know?”
Being able to switch positions is where Wilson has taken the most pride in his career, with 100 games played with the Phillies over parts of the last three seasons.
“I think that has been the thing that’s helped me to have more time in the big leagues,” he said. “Of course, you’ve got to hit and do those things when you get the opportunities, but yeah, I think being able to play multiple positions and help out where is needed – injuries here, there, whatever – kind of helps me bounce around.”
Albernaz is pleased with the depth options in camp.
“The NRIs, they’re performing well,” he said. “And that’s the beauty of this game, where those quote, unquote, NRIs, guys who have big league time, on and off the roster, and you’ve seen it across the game, but it’s also, those guys are always just one opportunity away of them being a big leaguer.
“Everyone here is very (aware of) Ryan O’Hearn and his background, and that’s kind of like a similar mold where you get DFA’d from the Royals, come here, goes to Triple-A to start the year, and next thing you know he gets an opportunity and he goes off. So all our guys, we just want them to be prepared for that opportunity so that they can run with it.
“All our NRIs, all of our players, have been playing really well.”
President of baseball operations Mike Elias, who was busy last night checking the field conditions, has the loudest voice when it comes to the roster construction.
“I am definitely not the decision-maker. I’m just the manager of the team,” Albernaz said.
“I have full trust in Mike and his group when it comes to those moves and decisions. When it comes to decision-making, obviously I’ll have my thoughts and opinions on stuff, but ultimately it’s an organizational approach to it, so it’s definitely not me making the sole decision.”
