SARASOTA – The camp experience for Trey Gibson keeps changing for the better.

The Orioles invited him to spring training and gave him a locker in the auxiliary clubhouse. They moved him across the hall to the main room after more cuts were made that created space. He got the start against the Cardinals in Jupiter in his third exhibition appearance and allowed two runs and one hit over four innings.

The team confirmed earlier today that Gibson will start for the Orioles in their Spring Breakout game against Red Sox prospects on Friday night at Ed Smith Stadium.

“I’m super grateful for the opportunity,” he said. “I think it shows that the guys in the front office and the coaching staff, they believe in me and trust me for this.”

Gibson, the organization’s No. 5 prospect per MLB Pipeline, tossed three scoreless relief innings against the Yankees before allowing three runs in 2 2/3 against the Tigers. He’s going to be reassigned to minor league camp so he can prepare for the 2026 season, which could include making his major league debut after he already was selected as the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

“It’s been amazing,” he said of his first major league camp. “A ton of great experiences with these guys in the clubhouse. Definitely have learned a lot. I’m taking every moment as I can. It’s pretty special being in the clubhouse with these types of guys with all the major league experience that they have. It’s just awesome.”

Coby Mayo hit a two-run homer earlier today off Yankees left-hander Max Fried a split-squad game in Tampa. The ball traveled 404 feet to left field at 110.3 mph.

The swing completed an eight-pitch at-bat in the second inning, with Mayo barreling a slider.

Mayo was batting .483 with a 1.262 OPS after the home run, his second of the spring.

Adley Rutschman had a single and double yesterday in Dunedin, and he lined an RBI single to center field today off Fried in the third inning to score Taylor Ward.

Ward had a leadoff single and Pete Alonso walked.

Gunnar Henderson is 1-for-3 with a single and walk.

Dean Kremer struck out eight batters in 4 1/3 innings. He allowed one run and two hits, walked three batters and committed a balk. His pitch count stood at 83 when he came out of the game in the fifth.

Yennier Cano retired the first two batters he faced in the sixth and ran the count full to Giancarlo Stanton before homering to right field.

Zach Eflin starts against the Yankees Friday night in Tampa.

Heston Kjerstad is leading off tonight in the other split-squad game against the Pirates in Sarasota. Samuel Basallo is catching. Jhonkensy Noel is the first baseman.

Weston Wilson gets a start in left field, with Leody Taveras in center. Luis Vázquez is the shortstop and Jeremiah Jackson is the second baseman.

Also in the utility competition are Bryan Ramos, who’s at third base, and Thairo Estrada, who’s the designated hitter.

Trevor Rogers, named the Opening Day starter, allowed two runs in four innings in his last appearance against the Pirates in Bradenton.

Right-hander Cam Sanders is starting for Pittsburgh. Ryan O’Hearn faces his former team again, batting second and playing right field.
