SARASOTA, Fla. – The Orioles are back in Tampa tonight for another game against the Yankees, their penultimate Grapefruit League encounter as spring training nears its conclusion.
At the same time, a group of prospects will play a group of Red Sox prospects in the Spring Breakout game at Ed Smith Stadium. A meaningless fake game except that it showcases young talent, including Trey Gibson, who starts for the Orioles.
Enrique Bradfield Jr. is the veteran with his third appearance. The organization’s No. 10 prospect per MLB Pipeline and former first-round pick is leading off and playing center field.
Other prospects in the lineup are ranked No. 3, 6, 7, 9, 19, 30 and 29. Starter Trey Gibson is fifth.
Right fielder Reed Trimble is the only player who isn’t in the rankings.
Ike Irish, the Orioles’ first pick in the 2025 draft, is playing first base and batting third.
Nate George is in left and Wehiwa Aloy is the designated hitter.
Florida Complex League manager Christian Frias is managing the Spring Breakout.
Zach Eflin is pitching at George M. Steinbrenner Field. He tossed two scoreless innings against the Rays on March 8 and two-plus against the Yankees in Sarasota on Sunday before a storm arrived.
Eflin also got work in a B game while the Orioles were on the East Coast of Florida.
The club hasn’t announced whether Eflin is on the Opening Day roster or getting extra work after his August back surgery that put him behind other starters. He feels good. He feels ready. But the official word is pending.
The Yankees are starting right-hander Luis Gil, who’s appeared in five exhibition games and registered a 6.28 ERA and 1.605 WHIP in 14 1/3 innings. He’s allowed 19 hits, struck out 17 batters and surrendered six home runs.
