Buck Showalter talks with the media about Zach Britton’s outing and the O’s 2-0 win over the Yankees

Here are some comments from Orioles manager Buck Showalter after his club’s 2-0 win in Game 1:

On whether Zach Britton’s performance was more satisfying because it came against the Yankees:
“We talked about it before the game in here, the process that you get challenged with here along the way. Sometimes guys go so quickly through the minor league system without getting their nose bloodied a little bit. It’s always good when you’re exposed to it than when you’re not. In a perfect world, you’d rather they not. There’s too many good players and good hitters – especially with the Yankees. He was solid. He was crisp. He was pitching on an extra day rest. He has the potential of pitching on an extra day next time, too. We had a little bit longer leash with him.”

On sending out Britton for the seventh inning at 110 pitches:
“I was going to let him face (Robinson) Cano and see where he went from there. He’s holding his stuff. It wasn’t an especially hot afternoon. With the number of pitches, the Yankees – they tick off so many pitches. There are not a lot of guys who are going to go out and have an 80-pitch, seven-inning outing. It wasn’t like there were a lot of baserunners out there every inning. He had good life. I thought he was crisp today. He made them aware of the breaking ball and the change-up. I thought Matty (Wieters) did a great job.”

On Britton throwing more sinkers:
“I thought he was. He was carrying a little more fastball and had good finish in the zone, which made it appear that it was. Matty asked if he gets credit for a ground ball to right field. Nicky made a great play on that. Wieters came by after the seventh chuckling. (Britton) asked if there was any chance I was going to let him come out there for the eighth. I told Matty that he should thank me for letting him come out there for the seventh. You see a thing that they get a good return for and it makes you smile.”
