Nick Markakis drew a two-out walk off former Orioles left-hander Erik Bedard in the bottom of the first and scored on Vladimir Guerrero’s double into left-center field.

Boston’s No. 9 hitter, Marco Scutaro, doubled to left field against Orioles rookie Zach Britton with two outs in the top of the third and came home on Jacoby Ellsbury’s 32nd home run of the season.

Ellsbury extended his hitting streak against the Orioles to 35 games. He also strengthened his MVP candidacy.

Three straight outs recorded by Britton came on fly balls to left field, including a drive by Carl Crawford that backed Nolan Reimold to the fence. Scutaro followed with his double, bringing Ellsbury to the plate.

Ben Zobrist’s two-run homer gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead over the Yankees at Tropicana Field. Moments later, Ellsbury launched a 1-1 changeup from Britton.

Update: Ryan Lavarnway, starting behind the plate because Jason Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia are nursing injuries, hit his first major league home run in the fourth inning – a three-run shot to left field that increased Boston’s lead to 5-1.

Update II: Matt Wieters deposited a two-run homer into the Orioles’ bullpen in the bottom of the fourth.

Red Sox 5, Orioles 3.

Wieters has 22 homers – 11 from each side. Twenty of those homers have come with Wieters as the catcher, one as the first baseman and one as the designated hitter.

It’s the sixth time that an Orioles catcher has hit at least 20 homers. Chris Hoiles did it three times, and Charles Johnson and Ramon Hernandez once apiece.
