Maybe something breaks later in the day, but right now it’s more of the same. The Orioles have interviewed Jerry Dipoto and Tony LaCava for the job of president of baseball operations. The Marlins denied them permission to contact Dan Jennings. They’re expected to interview Dodgers executive De Jon Watson this week. Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine is a possibility after the World Series.

In that order.

They still need a scouting director and two coaches. I’ve written in the past few weeks that Brian Graham is expected to replace John Stockstill as director of player development. I’ve heard that a few minor league coaches have been hired, with announcements coming at a later date.

Cal Ripken’s name keeps coming up, no matter how hard I push it down. If there’s an opening in this organization, at least one fan will suggest that Ripken fill it.

It’s not quite that simple.

He’s not interested in managing or coaching. He’s not interested in being the farm director or scouting director. He’s not interested in strictly being the general manager, though you’re getting warmer with that one.

In Ripken’s perfect world, he would take on a role similar to Nolan Ryan in Texas. Ryan is the Rangers’ principal owner, president and CEO. He’s responsible for shaping the organization, but Jon Daniels handles the contracts, negotiations and trade talks.

That’s a long way from roving infield instructor.

The Orioles are looking to make one hire following Andy MacPhail’s departure. They won’t bring in a president of baseball operations and a general manager.

They’re taking long enough to find one guy. Let’s not drag out the process any more.
