The Orioles placed Zach Eflin on the 15-day injured list this morning with right elbow discomfort and selected the contract of reliever Albert Suárez from Triple-A Norfolk.
Suárez didn’t have a locker set up this morning but he’s back on the team.
Infielder Jordan Westburg was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room for Suárez on the 40-man roster, ensuring that he won’t be activated before late May. Westburg received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow in spring training after an MRI revealed a slight tear in his ulnar collateral ligament.
Eflin was making a comeback from August back surgery and struck out seven batters in 3 2/3 innings, matching his season high in 2025. But he exited with elbow discomfort after throwing one pitch to Ezequiel Duran.
Pitching coach Drew French went to the mound after Eflin walked Evan Carter.
The club scheduled an MRI for Eflin, who returned to the Orioles on a contract guaranteeing $10 million and including a mutual option.
Suárez was reassigned after signing a minor league contract. He made five appearances in 2025, including one in Toronto in the opening series before going on the injured list with a shoulder strain. He missed about five months. A right elbow/forearm flexor strain in September ended his season.
The Orioles are getting a fresh arm. Suárez didn’t pitch for the Tides.
Suárez allowed nine earned runs and 10 total with 16 hits in 10 2/3 innings in spring training. Seven runs and nine hits came in 2 2/3 innings against the Cardinals on March 6. He held the Blue Jays to one run and three hits over four innings in his next appearance in Dunedin and the club stretched him out to 75 pitches.
Today’s game features Opening Day starters Trevor Rogers and Nathan Eovaldi.
Rogers tossed seven scoreless innings against the Twins at Camden Yards. Eovaldi faced the Phillies and allowed five runs and eight hits in 4 2/3. He struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter, but he also surrendered two home runs.
Rogers owns a 2.81 ERA in four career starts against Texas, which has won the first two games of the series.
Eovaldi is 9-3 with a 3.43 ERA in 20 career regular-season starts against the Orioles. He’s 2-0 with a 3.27 ERA in six starts at Camden Yards.
In Game 3 of the 2023 Division Series, Eovaldi held the Orioles to one run over seven innings to complete the sweep.
