The Orioles are 3-6 and dealing with another pitching injury and change to their projected bullpen and rotation.
Dietrich Enns was placed on the 15-day injured list this afternoon, retroactive to Saturday, with a left foot infection. The Orioles recalled Brandon Young from Triple-A Norfolk and he’s starting tonight’s series opener against the White Sox in Chicago.
Enns has allowed two runs and two hits with five walks and seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings in his three appearances. He walked three batters while surrendering a run Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
Control has been an issue for Enns since spring training, when he walked seven batters in 7 2/3 innings. He made the team but posted a 9.39 ERA and 2.217 WHIP in eight games.
Grant Wolfram is the only left-hander in the bullpen. Keegan Akin is on the 15-day injured list with a strained left groin. Cade Povich was recalled yesterday and tossed 5 2/3 innings, which made him a possible candidate to be optioned.
Only non-roster pitchers can be recalled unless replacing an injured Oriole due to the 15-day rule for optioned players.
Young made one start with Norfolk and allowed one run in five innings. The Orioles are pushing back Trevor Rogers to Tuesday night to give him extra rest.
The Orioles need a fifth starter with Zach Eflin on the 15-day injured list with right elbow discomfort. Eflin is flying to Dallas on Tuesday to receive a second opinion from Dr. Keith Meister.
Young made 12 starts with the Orioles last season as a rookie and registered a 6.24 ERA and 1.543 WHIP in 57 2/3 innings. He carried a perfect game into the eighth inning in Houston on Aug. 15 before former Orioles infielder Ramón Urías reached on an infield single.
A hamstring injury in his next start ended his season.
Tonight marks his first start against the White Sox, who just swept the Blue Jays in a three-game home series. They were 1-5 on their first road trip to Milwaukee and Miami.
The White Sox are starting Grant Taylor, the 10th consecutive right-hander to face the Orioles. Taylor already has made four appearances, the last two being one-inning starts. He retired all three batters in both games.
Taylor threw one scoreless relief inning against the Orioles on Sept. 17 in Chicago, walking one batter and striking out three.
Right-handers hit .301 with a .653 OPS against Taylor, and left-handers hit .225 with a .599 OPS.
Taylor has struggled in night games in his career, with a 5.40 ERA and .321 average in 22 games.
The Orioles have won their last eight series against the White Sox, tied for their second-longest streak.
Per STATS, the Orioles haven’t won at least nine consecutive series against an opponent since July 2004-May 2008 versus the Royals.
