The Orioles were down to one left-handed reliever tonight in a 2-1 win over the White Sox at Rate Field.
They made a move to address the shortage of southpaws.
The club has acquired Nick Raquet from the Cardinals, as first reported by MLB insider Ari Alexander and confirmed by multiple sources. A corresponding move must be made on the 40-man roster.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the Orioles are sending minor league infielder/outfielder Brayden Smith to the Cardinals, which also was confirmed by sources.
Raquet, 30, was a third-round draft pick of the Nationals in 2017 from the College of William and Mary. He was released three years later, signed with the Cardinals in January 2024, was released again later that year and re-signed in January 2025.
The only major league experience is two relief appearances covering two scoreless and hitless innings last summer. He quit baseball in 2020 and returned to college to finish his degree, working as an enterprise risk consultant, and made a comeback by playing independent ball in 2023.
Raquet pitched twice for Triple-A Memphis this season and allowed one run in three innings. The Cardinals designated him for assignment yesterday.
Raquet has registered a 3.69 ERA in six minor league seasons.
The Orioles drafted Smith in the 13th round in 2025 out of Oklahoma State. He played in 16 games with Single-A Delmarva last summer and went 11-for-55 (.200) with two doubles, a triple and a home run. He moved up to High-A Frederick this year and went 0-for-3 with a walk, stolen base and run scored in his only game.
Smith has played second base and the corner outfield as a professional.
