The Orioles completed their trade for Cardinals left-hander Nick Raquet, which sent minor league infielder/outfielder Brayden Smith to St. Louis.

Raquet has reported to the Orioles, enabling the club to activate him. He’s wearing No. 72, which belonged to reliever José Espada last year.

Before Espada were Eloy Jiménez in 2024, Nick Ciuffo in 2021 and Robert Machado in 2003-04.

Brandon Young was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after tossing five scoreless innings last night in a 2-1 win in Chicago.

Starter Zach Eflin was moved to the 60-day injured list to make room for Raquet on the 40-man roster. Eflin is flying to Dallas today for a second opinion on his right elbow, and he’s obviously going to miss significant time.

A decision is pending on how to construct the rotation. Dean Kremer is getting close to being eligible to return after the Orioles optioned him at the end of camp. Albert Suárez and Cade Povich are candidates, with the latter remaining on the roster after throwing 5 2/3 innings in relief Sunday in Pittsburgh.

The Orioles will try to secure a series win this afternoon after improving their record to 4-6.

Taylor Ward has reached base safely in each of his last nine games, batting .406 (13-32) with five doubles and three RBIs.

Adley Rutschman has reached base safely in each of his first eight games to begin the season. Five of his seven hits this season have been up the middle (71.4 percent), compared to 28.2 percent last season, per STATS.

Gunnar Henderson homered last night and is slashing .329/.444/.548 (24-for-73) against the White Sox in his career, with four homers, nine RBIs and a .992 OPS in 20 games. He’s also batting .301 (114-for-397) with 18 home runs and 53 RBI in 101 career games against American League Central opponents.

Trevor Rogers is making his third start. He’s gone seven and six innings with only two runs allowed.

Rogers has never faced the White Sox.

Orioles starters have completed five innings in five of 10 games.

The Orioles have won nine straight games at Rate Field. Last night marked their 200th road win against the White Sox.

Chicago’s Shane Smith is the 11th consecutive right-hander to face the Orioles, three short of the club record set in 1975. He’s off to a dreadful start, with 10 earned runs (12 total) and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

In Smith’s only career start against the Orioles as a rookie in 2025, he allowed six runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. He did strike out seven, however.

Jeremiah Jackson was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Coby Mayo was 2-for-2. Samuel Basallo homered and Dylan Beavers tripled.

Austin Hays is 9-for-16 in four career games against his former team, but he strained his right hamstring last night in the fourth inning.
