The Orioles just posted their lineup and Samuel Basallo is catching a day game after a night game.
He’s young.
Dylan Beavers is the designated hitter, Colton Cowser is in right field and Leody Taveras is in center. Tyler O’Neill is on the bench again as he recovers from an illness.
Coby Mayo is at third base and Jeremiah Jackson is the second baseman.
No roster move has been announced. Ryan Mountcastle is getting an MRI today on his left foot.
The Orioles have 11 players on the injured list, tied with the Dodgers for second in the majors behind the Diamondbacks’ 12. The Astros have 10.
*Gunnar Henderson has homered in four of the last five games to give him six, tied for most in the majors. He’s hit 17 in April over the past three seasons, second in the majors to Mike Trout’s 18, per STATS.
Henderson is the only player to account for at least half of his team’s home runs this season.
Taylor Ward’s 10 doubles in the first 13 games. Only two players needed fewer games since 1900, per STATS – Troy Glaus with 11 in 1999 and George Brett with 12 in 1983.
The top two hitters in the lineup are batting .295, second in the majors behind the Astros’ .311.
Left-hander Cade Povich, celebrating his 26th birthday, moves into the rotation after allowing two runs in 5 2/3 relief innings last Sunday in Pittsburgh. This is Povich’s 40th career major league appearance and his 37th start.
Povich has never faced the Giants. Rafael Devers is 3-for-11 against him.
Povich is the first Orioles starter to pitch on his birthday since Travis Lakins Sr. on June 29, 2021 in Houston. He’s trying to become the first Orioles starter to earn a victory on his birthday since John Means on April 24, 2019 versus the White Sox.
Orioles pitchers have a 10.93 ERA in the second inning, highest in the majors, and a 2.96 ERA in the other innings, third-lowest in the majors.
The Giants have posted a .758 OPS against lefties and a .599 OPS versus right-handers, the largest difference in the majors.
The Giants’ Adrian Houser is the 15th consecutive right-hander to face the Orioles to begin the season, breaking the franchise record of 14 set in 1975, per STATS. Houser has started twice this season and allowed five earned runs (seven total) and 15 hits in 11 1/3 innings.
Right-handers hit .234 with a .631 OPS against Houser in his career, and left-handers hit .284 with an .829 OPS.
Houser has made two career starts against the Orioles and is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA and 1.600 WHIP in 10 innings.
Pete Alonso is 4-for-11 against Houser. Ward is 3-for-3.
Speaking of Alonso, 52.1 percent of his 265 homers have been hit with at least one runner on base. Another nugget from STATS: Since 1961, only three of the 220 players with at least 250 have a higher percentage than Alonso. Dave Parker’s at 54.3 percent, Garret Anderson at 53.7 and Orioles legend Boog Powell at 52.8.
