Manager Craig Albernaz has become a victim of the injuries sweeping through the Orioles organization.
Albernaz was hit on the side of the head by Jeremiah Jackson’s line drive into the dugout in the fifth inning of tonight’s game against the Diamondbacks. He didn’t lose his footing and was ushered down the tunnel by a coach and athletic trainer.
Jackson stepped out of the box and kept looking in the dugout before finishing his at-bat and reaching on an infield single against Ryne Nelson.
The line drive was clocked at 70.6 mph and it nailed Albernaz as he stood on the top step, his usual perch. He tried to turn away and couldn’t avoid impact.
Albernaz is managing his 16th major league game after the Orioles hired him in October. He spent the past two seasons as the Guardians’ bench coach and assistant manager.
The run of luck by the Orioles keeps getting worse.
Reliever Dietrich Enns went on the injured list with a mysterious infection in his left foot that Albernaz described as “gnarly.” Outfielder Tyler O’Neill fainted from dehydration on the off-day and apparently hit his head, which put him on the seven-day concussion list. Catcher Adley Rutschman went on the IL with inflammation in his left ankle after running to second base on a double. Ryan Mountcastle broke a bone in his left foot while running to second base on a double – after he replaced Rutschman in the lineup.
And that’s just recently.
Thirteen Orioles are on the injured list and their manager, at best, will have a bad contusion. He may need to go into concussion protocol.
It’s unlikely that Albernaz will speak to the media after the game, but the club will provide an update on his condition.
