The Marlins, White Sox, Cubs, Indians and Tigers also have been linked to Cespedes. It’s not known whether the Tigers have decided to pass on him after signing Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million deal.

“The interest is meaningful,” Katz said.

However, Katz said there’s an “immigration issue” that Cespedes must deal with first, which makes it impossible to establish a timeline for when his client will be ready to sign.

“It would be my preference to have the immigration issues behind me so we can move quicker, but it is what it is,” Katz said. “I’m not going to whine or complain about it. This is what the process is. That’s step one. If it’s quick, then it will be quick. If it’s a little more than quick, it will be a little more than quick.”

You’ve probably figured out that Katz doesn’t like to share details of his negotiations with the media.

Ferreira is trying to determine whether Cespedes is ready for the majors or needs at-bats at the Double-A or Triple-A level. And whether he’s worth a contract that some industry types have estimated could be worth around $32 million for four years.

Cespedes batted .333 with 33 homers and 99 RBIs for the Cuban National Team in 2010-11. He collected five hits and struck out 10 times in 35 at-bats in the Dominican Winter League.
