The Orioles found another reliever to fill out the bullpen and assist in supporting a rotation that’s struggling to cover innings.
Right-hander Lou Trivino has signed a one-year major league deal. The Orioles made the announcement this evening.
Trey Gibson was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after making his major league debut yesterday at Yankee Stadium and allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Trivino, 34, opted out of his minor league contract with the Phillies last week. He’s wearing No. 58.
The Orioles landed a six-year veteran with a 3.87 ERA in 332 games with the Athletics, Yankees, Giants, Dodgers and Phillies. Trivino underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023 and missed the 2024 season after experiencing inflammation in the elbow.
Three teams employed Trivino last year, and he had a 2.77 ERA this year in 10 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He allowed four earned runs and 15 hits with four walks and 20 strikeouts over 13 innings.
The bullpen had seven relievers – Andrew Kittredge, Yennier Cano, Andrew Nunez, Rico Garcia, Keegan Akin, Grant Wolfram and Dietrich Enns. A doubleheader last week forced the Orioles to go with six starters, and they’re listing Brandon Young and Cade Povich for the upcoming series in Miami.
Shane Baz starts tonight at Yankee Stadium, and Chris Bassitt gets the ball Tuesday against the Marlins. Kyle Bradish started on Saturday.
Gibson impressed with his composure and his slider, but he’ll have to wait his turn.
The pitching staff’s ERA has grown to 4.76, which ranks 27th in the majors. The 1.48 WHIP is 28th.
The injured list includes Opening Day starter Trevor Rogers, Dean Kremer, Zach Eflin and closer Ryan Helsley.
Helsley has right elbow inflammation but will be re-evaluated for throwing later this week. Kremer (right quadriceps) is continuing his rehabilitation and throwing program.
Second baseman Jackson Holliday (right hand) and outfielder Heston Kjerstad (right hamstring) will be re-evaluated to potentially begin a rehab assignment soon.
Also today, Albert Suárez cleared outright waivers and accepted an assignment to Norfolk. He declined the last one and signed a new minor league contract.
The 40-man roster is full.
Update: Manager Craig Albernaz told the media in New York that infielder Jordan Westburg is being shut down due to discomfort in his elbow after increasing the intensity of his throwing progression.
Westburg received a platelet-rich plasma injection in spring training rather than undergo surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament.
Second baseman Jackson Holliday will take batting practice Tuesday with Double-A Chesapeake and begin playing games with the Baysox this weekend if he doesn’t experience any pain in his right hand.
