Another injury interfered with the Orioles’ lineup plans. Trevor Rogers had another disappointing start in his return to the active roster.

There wouldn’t be another exciting comeback at Camden Yards.

Rogers allowed six runs and six hits in four innings, and the Orioles lost to the Yankees 6-2 before an announced crowd of 20,344.

The Orioles took another step back after consecutive wins, falling to 19-24 as the series concludes Wednesday afternoon.

Rogers walked three batters, struck out three and surrendered a pair of home runs.

“Wasn’t as sharp as he usually is,” said manager Craig Albernaz, “but it was good to see him back out there.”

One night after Ryan Weathers no-hit the Orioles for six innings, Will Warren held them to one hit through the fifth. Samuel Basallo returned to the lineup and doubled with one out in the second.

Jeremiah Jackson reached with two outs in the fifth on a single that the official scorer changed to a fielding error. Jackson advanced on a wild pitch and was stranded.

Taylor Ward led off the sixth with a double to snap an 0-for-19 streak. He scored with two outs on Basallo’s single, and Tyler O’Neill followed with an RBI double, his second extra-base hit this season in 23 games.

Warren allowed two runs and four hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

The Orioles have scored three runs or fewer in six consecutive games.

The Yankees broke a four-game losing streak.

Rogers can’t rally from frightful first pitch

The Orioles reinstated Rogers from the 15-day injured list earlier today, his return complete from a horrible bout with the flu.

Leadoff hitter Paul Goldschmidt saw one pitch from Rogers, a 93.9 mph fastball, and hit it 402 feet to left field at 109.8 mph for an immediate 1-0 lead.

Pretty rude way to welcome back a guy.

It pretty much set the tone.

Ben Rice was stranded in the first after a one-out single and the side was retired in order in the second. But Austin Wells led off the third with a single and Aaron Judge and Rice walked with one out, bringing pitching coach Drew French to the mound. Cody Bellinger bounced into a force to score Wells and Judge came home on Amed Rosario’s infield single.

Coby Mayo’s running throw from foul territory bounced and pulled Pete Alonso off the bag.

Trent Grisham followed with a three-run homer to right-center field and the Yankees led 6-0.

Was Rogers still weakened from his illness or was it just a continuation of his struggles? He’s allowed 19 runs (18 earned) and 25 hits in his last four starts covering 15 1/3 innings and his ERA is 5.77.

“I was actually happy with where my energy level was throughout the game, so it’s definitely a positive that I take from today,” he said. “Just the work that I put in to get to this point. So felt good there.

“I think probably the only thing is I’m not quote, unquote, surprising people anymore. Like, they know my pitches, they know what I’m gonna throw. Obviously, they’re not gonna know in what order I’m gonna throw them. At the end of the day, I love where my stuff’s at. I love where my stuff was at today. Just got to keep controlling what I can control. Not really caring what the scoreboard says.

“Obviously, want to minimize damage as best I can, but it just comes down to executing pitches better and just continue to keep doing what I’m doing and it’ll turn around. We’ve got a lot of baseball ahead of me.”

Rogers put two runners on base with two outs in the fourth and struck out Rice. Josh Walker replaced him and became the 41st player used this season.

Walker tossed two scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

Orioles can’t burn Yankees after blunders

The Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in the third because the Yankees’ defense forgot how to make routine plays.

Mayo drew a leadoff walk, shortstop Max Schuemann committed a throwing error and third baseman Ryan McMahon tried to start a double play and fired the ball to Rosario, who wasn’t covering the bag. He was an innocent bystander.

It was scored as a fielder’s choice and the error was removed a few innings later. Using ink is a bad idea on lineup sheets here on certain nights.

The bizarre sequence could have gotten the Orioles back in the game, but Ward flied to right field, too shallow to score Mayo, and Adley Rutschman grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

‘Pen did its part

Walker got the relief ball rolling with his two scoreless innings, but he wasn’t the only pitcher to stop the Yankees from scoring after Rogers left the game.

Yennier Cano tossed a scoreless seventh inning with one hit allowed, which was followed by Rice’s double play. His ERA is 1.20.

Andrew Kittredge retired the side in order in the eighth. Before tonight, he allowed eight earned runs and 10 total this month in 2 2/3 innings.

Tyler Wells, recalled earlier today, walked two and gave up a ground ball single to Judge without allowing a run. Adley Rutschman atoned for a dropped popup in front of the Orioles’ dugout by throwing out Schuemann attempting to steal.

The Orioles are wired for weirdness

Basallo was a late scratch last night with left knee discomfort. Mayo replaced him and gave the Orioles a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning with a dramatic three-run homer.

The slumping giant had awakened.

Basallo returned to the lineup tonight, but Dylan Beavers was a late scratch due to right oblique discomfort. Colton Cowser replaced him in center field.

The switch didn’t have the same effect on Cowser, who went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Beavers didn’t play last night with the Yankees starting Weathers and replacing him with lefty Brent Headrick. Beavers will be the 19th different Oriole on the IL if he can’t avoid it.

“It’s tough,” Rogers said. “Baseball’s going to beat you up sometimes, and hate to hear that for Beavers. He was really starting to play well and get his footing, and hopefully it’s nothing serious. But then again, it’s kind of that next-man-up mentality,  and just continue to grind and put games together and just try to figure out a way to win. I have no doubt in my mind that we’ll get there.”

Albernaz wasn’t sure whether Beavers would need a stint on the IL.

“All I know is he was hitting in the cage before the game to get ready and he felt something in his side and was out of the lineup,” Albernaz said.

Cowser wasn’t in the original lineup for the past five games.

Among today’s other notable events was Wells’ return, with left-handed reliever Grant Wolfram going on the 15-day injured list with a lower-back strain.

“His back locked up on him a couple days ago,” Albernaz said. “We were kind of hoping it would subside. It just didn’t. He just wasn’t bouncing back, and earlier today he tried to go out and throw and tried to feel it and he still felt it, so we made the move to bring Wells up.”

Catcher Maverick Handley was placed on the taxi squad in case Basallo’s condition worsened.

Oh yeah, and Wednesday’s game was moved from 6:35 p.m. to 1:05 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather.

When it rains for this team, it pours.

Down on the farm

Jackson Holliday played third base tonight after his injury rehab assignment moved from Double-A Chesapeake to Triple-A Norfolk. He was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Heston Kjerstad joined Holliday and had a double, single and RBI. José Barrero hit his eighth home run and had an RBI single, and Reed Trimble added a three-run shot after rejoining the Tides from his injury rehab assignment.

High-A Frederick’s Victor Figueroa hit his ninth home run, a grand slam, had a run-scoring triple and finished with six RBIs to give him 29 to go with a .318 average and 1.052 OPS. The Orioles acquired Figueroa from the Padres in the Ryan O’Hearn/Ramón Laureano deadline trade.

Shortstop Wehiwa Aloy had three more hits and a walk and is batting .321 with a 1.007 OPS.

Wednesday starter

The Orioles announced late tonight that Kyle Bradish will start Wednesday’s series finale.
