The Orioles needed to make another bullpen move today for a fresh arm and brought back veteran right-hander Albert Suárez.
Suárez had his contract selected again from Triple-A Norfolk. Right-hander Cameron Foster was optioned after allowing four runs and five hits last night in 1 1/3 innings to raise his ERA to 9.00.
Junior Caminero hit a three-run homer off Foster in the fifth.
Catcher Maverick Handley was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. The Orioles optioned him yesterday.
Suárez was non-tendered by the Orioles in the offseason and signed a minor league deal. His contract was selected on April 1, the Orioles designated him on the 26th, and they signed him to another minor league deal four days later.
The Orioles selected his contract again on May 1 and designated him the next day. He was outrighted to Norfolk on the 4th.
He’s never really gone for long.
Suárez has appeared in six games and allowed six earned runs (10 total) with 11 hits, nine walks and nine strikeouts over 15 2/3 innings.
Meanwhile, we’re going to find out how high the Orioles can bounce back after last night’s embarrassing defeat.
The Rays won 16-6, marking the third time that they’ve scored 16 runs or more against the Orioles. It also happened on Sept. 5, 2007 at Tropicana Field and July 12, 2019 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles are a half-game out of last place and 11 behind the first-place Rays. Their minus-54 run differential is tied with the Astros for second worst behind the Angels’ minus-59.
Tampa Bay improved to 17-5 at home.
Jackson Holliday could make his first appearance in the lineup after the Orioles reinstated him yesterday from the injured list.
Jeremiah Jackson started again at second base last night and had two hits. He’s posted a .478 average and .957 slugging percentage when ahead in the count. His slugging leads all Orioles with 20 plate appearances, per STATS.
Weston Wilson became the third Orioles player to hit a homer and pitch in the same game after tossing a scoreless eighth last night. He joined Kris Benson on June 17, 2006 in Queens and Zack Britton on July 3, 2011 in Atlanta.
Kyle Bradish has allowed three runs and struck out 17 batters in his last two starts over 13 innings to lower his ERA from 5.03 to 4.21.
The opponents’ average against Bradish’s curveball has lowered from .267 in April to .111 this month. His curveball usage has increased from 19.7 percent in April to 28.8 percent this month.
The rotation’s ERA is 5.24, second highest in the majors behind Colorado’s 5.62. The bullpen ERA is 4.66 to rank 24th.
Orioles catchers have thrown out 29.2 percent of runners attempting to steal, sixth highest in the majors.
Tampa Bay right-hander Griffin Jax is making his fifth start tonight among 16 appearances and his 21st out of 315 during a six-year major league career. He’s posted a 3.91 ERA and 1.478 WHIP this season with 14 walks in 23 innings.
Griffin’s last four appearances have come as a starter and he’s gone 2 1/3, 2 2/3, four and five innings. He didn’t allow a run Wednesday in Toronto.
Right-handers have hit .219/.273/.366 against Jax in his career, and left-handers have hit .242/.318/.405.
Jax has made 10 relief appearances against the Orioles and allowed two runs in 10 innings. Pete Alonso is 2-for-3 with two doubles and Tyler O’Neill is 2-for-4.
