The Orioles have designated left-handed reliever Dietrich Enns for assignment while recalling southpaw Nick Raquet from Triple-A Norfolk.
The 40-man roster is down to 38 players.
Enns has a 3.94 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in 13 appearances. He allowed two runs yesterday in the 13th inning but got the win. Eight of his 10 outings this month were scoreless.
Enns missed about a month with a left foot infection, putting him among the 19 players to go on the injured list.
The Orioles signed Enns in November to a $2.625 million contract with a club option. The Orioles needed a fresh reliever after playing 31 innings in 31 hours, but the Enns move was unexpected.
His contract could prevent other teams from claiming him, enabling the Orioles to keep him in the organization.
Enns appeared in 17 games last season and posted a 3.14 ERA in 28 2/3 innings. The Orioles acquired him from the Tigers at the deadline for cash considerations.
Raquet is riding the shuttle from Triple-A. He’s appeared in three games with the Orioles and allowed three runs in 2 2/3 innings. All three runs came in his debut with the club on April 10.
Raquet went two-thirds of an inning on April 14 and tossed a scoreless inning on May 2.
The Orioles resume their series tonight against the Rays.
Shane Baz is facing his former team for the second time in two starts. He allowed one run and two hits in six innings at Tropicana Field.
Pete Alonso is batting .342 with a .789 slugging percentage this month against fastballs.
The Orioles are 24-30 at the one-third mark of the season, trailing the first-place Rays by 11 ½ games. They’re one game ahead of the last-place Red Sox.
Griffin Jax faced the Orioles last week and allowed one run and three hits with six strikeouts in five innings. Taylor Ward had a leadoff homer in the first.
The Rays are adding veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel to the bullpen. Kimbrel elected free agency last week after the Mets designated him for assignment.
Yandy Díaz’s strikeout rate increases from 5.9 percent at home to 15.2 percent on the road.
Lineups will be posted later.
