Coby Mayo isn’t in tonight’s lineup but could come off the bench after tightness in his lower back forced the Orioles to scratch him from the Game 1 lineup on Sunday.
“Better,” Mayo said. “Just getting what I need in the training room, weight room, getting out there and working today, feeling pretty good. Should be available tonight.”
Mayo has experienced back discomfort in the past and pretty much knew what to expect.
“Just pregame, just didn’t feel right,” he said. “Kind of tightened up on me, some inflammation in there, but feeling pretty good now.
“I knew it would be a few days. Obviously, being a three-man bench with me out the last two days hasn’t been ideal, especially with an extra-inning game last night. But feeling better now.”
Mayo has posted an .816 OPS with a double and two homers in 12 games since May 7, compared to his .501 OPS with three doubles and three homers through his first 31.
This is not the time to experience a health issue.
“I think anytime there’s a little injury, whether it’s just a day or a week or longer, there’s always frustration, but it’s part of the game,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of guys in this league that goes through a little something, so just happy I was able to get it to die down a little bit.”
Blaze Alexander is playing third base tonight, but at least manager Craig Albernaz has a full bench again.
“He had a really good day yesterday of treatment, and then earlier today he had a great day of treatment,” Albernaz said. “He got some work in and he’s feeling much better.”
The Orioles designated left-handed reliever Dietrich Enns for assignment earlier today to make room for lefty Nick Raquet on the active roster.
“It’s tough,” Albernaz said. “It’s the worst part of the job. It’s tough for anyone to deliver that news to, and D, he’s been great for us. He’ll be fine. He’s a great pitcher, he’ll be fine. But also, it’s tough to have those conversations with him. He took it like a pro. We’ll see what the future holds for him. But we had to get a fresh arm up here, so we have Raquet up here with us.”
Albernaz didn’t have an update on Cade Povich beyond how the left-hander received a cortisone injection last week in his elbow. He was scheduled for a reassessment yesterday to begin a throwing progression.
Povich’s locker no longer has his name plate above it, but that isn’t unusual for players who are away for extended periods due to injury.
The Orioles began the day two games back for the last Wild Card and 11 ½ out of first place.
Albernaz will take your word for it. He isn’t checking the standings.
“No way,” he said. “It’s not even June yet. There’s a lot of games left. And that’s why for us, we’re not at that point yet. There’s always a point where you have to, right? When it gets down to crunch time, obviously. But also, in the same breath, each win is hard and we value the crap out of each win. That’s why we try to win every single game we play. It doesn’t matter who it is.
“For us, it’s sticking with our process, Day One mentality. I think the standings are what they are right now. It’s the same thing with guys with their numbers hitting or pitching. Your numbers are going to be what they are at the end of the year. But if you try to worry about them now, you’re gonna drive yourself nuts. So it’s kind of the same scope as that.
“We just have to worry about showing up each day and doing everything we can to win the game at hand.”
