Adam Jones drilled a three-run homer to center field off Yankees starter Ivan Nova to give the Orioles an early lead. After Chris Davis grounded out, Matt Wieters launched a home run to right field on a two-strike pitch.

Jones was 5-for-22 with two RBIs before tonight, but he seemed prolific compared to Wieters, who was 2-for-20 with no RBIs.

Jones didn’t have an extra-base hit this spring, but he nailed the batter’s eye beyond the 400-foot sign.

Alfredo Simon threw 12 pitches in a scoreless top of the first, seven for strikes. Eduardo Nunez reached on an infield hit with one out, but Matt Wieters threw him out trying to steal to steal to end the inning.

Update: Simon is done after two innings. In his first game since March 10, Simon allowed one run and two hits, walked one and hit a batter. He threw 32 pitches, 19 for strikes.

Luis Ayala has replaced him in the third with the Orioles leading 5-1.

Simon, who had been held back because of a sore groin, nailed Bill Hall on the batting helmet with a 76 mph changeup. Hall immediately rose to his feet and signaled to the Yankees’ dugout that he was fine.

Endy Chavez began the night batting .409, and he’s 2-for-2 with an RBI single in the second. Rule 5 pick Ryan Flaherty started the rally with a leadoff single and took second on Robert Andino’s sacrifice bunt.

Chavez was doubled off first base on J.J. Hardy’s fly ball to center fielder Brett Gardner.
