DUNEDIN, Fla. – Shortstop J.J. Hardy continues to be bothered by soreness in his right shoulder, and he received a cortisone injection yesterday in an attempt to alleviate the discomfort and get back into the lineup.
Manager Buck Showalter said Hardy could play Friday against the Tigers in Sarasota.
“He’s a little sore from (the injection) today, but he’s getting there. I’m hoping he’s a Friday player,” Showalter said.

“He’s a little sore from (the injection) today, but he’s getting there. I’m hoping he’s a Friday player,” Showalter said.
Team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens examined Hardy’s shoulder yesterday. Wilckens and head athletic trainer Richie Bancells believe that the cortisone “should resolve it completely,” Showalter said.
“Just go ahead and not take any chances. Go ahead and get it resolved. Hope that’s the case. I’m hoping that he’s a player on Friday.”
Outfielder Endy Chavez (groin) is “doing better,” Showalter said. Chavez could return to the lineup Thursday, but how many times have I written it? We’re still waiting.
Tommy Hunter will start a minor league game on Sunday, while Wei-Yin Chen starts against the Rays in Sarasota.
As for the lineup, Showalter will start Johnny Ruettiger in center field instead of Glynn Davis. He also flip-flopped Scott Beerer and Ryan Flaherty.
For the Orioles:
Johnny Ruettiger CF
Scott Beerer RF
Ryan Flaherty 1B
Ronny Paulino C
Jai Miller DH
Manny Machado SS
LJ Hoes LF
Jonathan Schoop 2B
Jason Esposito 3B
Dana Eveland LHP
