The Orioles are full of surprises.
They lost two of three games against the Padres at home and the Mariners in Seattle, and they couldn’t protect a three-run lead in the ninth inning Friday night at Dodger Stadium. Their record was 35-42, pushing them 3 ½ games out of the Wild Card.
The best team in baseball could have buried them, but the Dodgers found out that the Orioles’ unpredictability is part of their maddening charm.
After hanging on last night for a 3-2 win, the Orioles scored in each of the first four innings today and clubbed four home runs en route to a 12-1 victory.
Just like that, the Orioles are 37-42 as they head to Anaheim to play the Angels, who have the worst record in the American League.
Go ahead and pronounce them dead, but they keep rising again. Their games should be broadcast on the Syfy network.
Brandon Young’s quality starts streak ended at five, but he allowed one run in five innings and lowered his ERA to 3.07. He retired eight of his last nine batters. His fastball resided in the 94-96 mph range.
His heels are dug into this rotation.
Max Muncy had a two-out RBI single in the first that scored Shohei Ohtani, who led off with a walk.
The Orioles scored twice in the first, once in the second and third and twice in the fourth. Taylor Ward homered in the second and also singled and walked. They loaded the bases with no outs in the first before Samuel Basallo and Colton Cowser delivered RBI singles.
Cowser was 1-for-14 against left-handers heading into the series. He singled off Dodgers southpaw Jack Dreyer Friday night and again today, driving in two runs in the fourth inning.
Cowser tied career highs with three hits and four RBIs today, all of his production coming by the fourth. He homered in the third off Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan, who was charged with six runs and eight hits in 3 1/3 innings. The six runs were the second most among his 42 career games.
Blaze Alexander came within a triple of the cycle. He scored in the seventh inning on Jeremiah Jackson’s double and punctuated the romp with a two-run shot off former Orioles pitcher Chayce McDermott in the eighth.
Alexander has six multi-hit games this month, 10 since May 13 and 12 since May 3. He’s registered seven three-hit games since May 4.
The day ended with Alexander batting .312 with an .809 OPS.
Pete Alonso already turned the game into a rout in the seventh with a three-run, opposite-field homer off Jonathan Hernández, his team-leading 18th of the season.
Ten of Alonso’s 18 homers have gone to the opposite field, tying his career high set last year with the Mets.
Alonso has hit 12 homers in 25 games at Dodger Stadium. His career 1.074 OPS at the venue before today ranked as the fourth highest by any player.
Leody Taveras produced his American League-leading fifth triple in the eighth inning and scored on Alexander’s homer.
The two-time defending World Series champions hadn’t lost back-to-back games since May 11-12.
Don’t try to make sense of it.
