The Orioles made a roster move that impacted their bullpen less than five minutes before first pitch.
Left-hander Keegan Akin went on the 15-day injured list retroactive to yesterday with left elbow discomfort, and the Orioles recalled lefty Josh Walker from Triple-A Norfolk.
Akin has registered a 5.68 ERA and 1.461 WHIP in 24 appearances, including two starts as an opener. He tossed two scoreless innings Saturday against the Nationals, just as he did June 21 at Dodger Stadium.
In between were two unearned runs against the Angels in the 10th inning of a 7-6 loss.
Akin began the season on the 15-day IL after straining his groin while warming in the Ed Smith Stadium bullpen during the final exhibition game in Florida. He didn’t pitch for the Orioles until April 25, when he allowed six runs and six hits in an inning-plus in a 17-1 loss to the Red Sox.
Prior to the latest injury, Akin was the longest tenured Orioles player on the active roster.
The Orioles finally got their IL total down to eight and it’s back up to nine. They can whittle it to eight again if Dean Kremer is reinstated Wednesday.
Walker has appeared in three games with the Orioles and allowed two runs and three hits in four innings. He’s walked two and struck out five.
Walker has registered a 4.94 ERA and 1.098 WHIP in 21 games with Norfolk. He’s walked nine and struck out 32 in 27 1/3 innings.
Reliever Yaramil Hiraldo is beginning his injury rehab assignment Wednesday with High-A Frederick while attempting to return from right shoulder inflammation.
Hiraldo was supposed to pitch yesterday but the outing had to be rescheduled due to rain.
Reliever Colin Selby is getting a second opinion on his right shoulder.
Closer Félix Bautista is continuing his rehabilitation and mound progression that includes bullpen sessions in Sarasota.
