The Orioles reinstated Dean Kremer from the 60-day injured list this morning, which required two corresponding moves.
Trey Gibson was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk after last night’s start. Catcher Dom Keegan was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
Kremer strained his right quadriceps muscle while working out after his April 18 start, only his second with the Orioles. They optioned him at the end of spring training.
Kremer is 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA in four career starts against the White Sox.
Andrew Benintendi is 1-for-10 against Kremer. Kyle Teels is 2-for-3 with a homer.
It’s a small sample size, but Kremer has increased the usage rate on his splitter from 20.9 percent last season to 42.3.
Gibson allowed eight runs last night in 2 2/3 innings. He can hop back into Norfolk’s rotation.
Left-hander Josh Walker also was optioned after appearing in the first two games of the White Sox series. Cameron Weston was recalled.
Weston made his major league debut on May 28 against the Blue Jays and tossed a scoreless inning with a walk and strikeout.
The Orioles claimed Keegan on waivers from the Rays over the weekend and optioned him to Double-A Chesapeake.
The Orioles are nine games below .500 and five back in the Wild Card. They remain a half-game ahead of the last-place Red Sox.
White Sox rookie left-hander Noah Schultz, a first-round draft pick in 2022, has posted a 5.82 ERA in eight starts. He’s walked 22 in 38 2/3 innings.
Left-handers are hitting .148/.303/.185 against Schultz, and right-handers are hitting .232/.346/.446.
Schultz was reinstated from the injured list this morning after recovering from right knee patellar tendinitis. He missed about five weeks.
