Triple-A Norfolk picked up a walk-off win Sunday, 4-3 over Charlotte on Ryan Adams’ two-out, bases-loaded single in the last of the ninth. The Tides are now 5-6.
Outfielder Jai Miller went 0-for-2 Sunday to end his six-game batting streak. Miller is hitting .297 over ten games but has struck out a whopping 20 times in 37 at-bats so far for Norfolk.
Brad Bergesen, who is 0-1 with an ERA of 8.68 in his first two starts, pitches tonight for the Tides at Gwinnett. Chris Tillman, who threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his last start, turned 24 on Sunday. Jason Berken has put together nine shutout innings over his first two starts.
Manny Machado continues to do just fine at Double-A Bowie. Through 11 games, he is batting .289 with four doubles, two homers, six RBIs and with a slugging percentage of .511 with an OPS of .884. Machado has hit third in the order three times, fourth three times and fifth five times.
His double-play partner, second baseman Jonathan Schoop, is now hitting better after a 2-for-19 start at the plate. Over his last four games, Schoop is 6-for-16 to raise his average to .229.
Brandon Waring is 11-for-21 during a five-game hitting streak which has raised his average from .077 to .353. The Baysox lead the league with 14 homers.
Tyler Townsend is off to a good start with the bat and in ten games is batting .297 with four homers, 11 RBIs and an OPS of 1.044.
But Townsend has had two very poor games on defense recently, making a combined five errors in his last two starts at first base. He started as the DH for Bowie’s win Sunday at Erie.
Bobby Bundy (1-1, 3.27) makes his third of the season tonight when the Baysox play at Akron.
Single-A Frederick is 5-4 after a win Sunday at Wilmington. Ty Kelly went 2-for-4 with an RBI and is off to a .385 batting start. Outfielder Trent Mummey has struggled and is batting just .133. The Keys host Potomac tonight at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds scored nine runs in the first inning Sunday to rout Greensboro 19-2 at Perdue Stadium. It’s the most runs by a Shorebird team since a 19-run output on July 13, 2009 against the Lexington Legends. Delmarva scored nine runs during a first inning which featured a Sammie Starr grand slam. Delmarva had 15 hits and drew 12 walks.
The two through four hitters – Starr, Jason Esposito and Gabriel Lino – combined for 12 RBIs, eight hits and 10 runs scored. Starr recorded a career high five RBIs. Lino became the first Shorebirds player to homer twice in one game since Tyler Kolodny hit two against Hagerstown on April 18, 2010. Delmarva is 6-5 and hosts Hagerstown tonight.
Dylan Bundy makes his next start, his third of the year and first at home, Tuesday night at Perdue Stadium. His mound opponent will be Alex Meyer, a pitcher taken with the 23rd pick in round one of last year’s draft in a matchup of Orioles’ and Nationals’ first-round picks.
