CHICAGO – In his previous start in Toronto, Orioles right-hander Tommy Hunter surrendered four home runs over six innings in a 7-5 victory.
The White Sox have homered twice off Hunter in four innings tonight to build a 4-1 lead over the Orioles at U.S. Cellular Field.
A.J. Pierzynski’s two-run shot in the second erased the Orioles’ 1-0 lead. The White Sox loaded the bases in the third, and Alex Rios came through with a sacrifice fly. Hunter has allowed four runs and seven hits in four innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. He’s thrown 68 pitches, 43 for strikes.
Jake Peavy has struck out seven batters in five innings. He’s held the Orioles to three hits, including Endy Chavez’s RBI double in the second.
Nick Markakis singled in the fourth, making him 4-for-37.
UPDATE: Hunter left with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth. Troy Patton let all three inherited runners score on Adam Dunn’s double with the count full.
Hunter is charged with eight runs and nine hits, raising his ERA to 5.79. He walked four, tied his career high with eight strikeouts and hit a batter. He threw 101 pitches, 62 for strikes.
That’s the most runs allowed by Hunter since the Angels scored eight against him on July 30, 2010.
Gordon Beckham, who was 0-for-2 and began the night batting .103, had an RBI single off Hunter in the sixth.
