The Orioles made a minor deal this morning, acquiring right-hander Cam Sanders from the Pirates for cash considerations and optioning him to Triple-A Norfolk.

Left-hander Keegan Akin was transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster.

The Pirates designated Sanders for assignment on Saturday after acquiring Jacob Gonzalez and Brandon Eisert from the White Sox.

Sanders, 29, was a 12th-round pick by the Cubs in the 2018 draft out of LSU. He made six relief appearances last year and allowed six runs and nine hits with five walks in 6 2/3 innings. He appeared in nine games this season and allowed nine runs and nine hits with 10 walks and 13 strikeouts in 9 1/3.

The nine runs scored in three games.

In 22 appearances this year with Triple-A Indianapolis, Sanders registered a 2.96 ERA with 17 walks and 44 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings. He’s averaged 6.0 walks and 10.9 strikeouts in 253 minor league games.

Akin is scheduled to meet Tuesday with Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. He hasn’t pitched since June 27 due to inflammation in his left elbow.

Akin sustained an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament and could be facing surgery. The Orioles will know more about his condition and treatment after his appointment with Meister.

They’re braced for bad news.

Over 24 games this season, Akin has registered a 5.68 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in 25 1/3 innings. He was used twice as an opener.

Akin is a pending free agent and might have been available in a trade if healthy.

*The Orioles announced tonight that they optioned left-hander Nick Raquet to Norfolk.

Nothing about a corresponding move.

Raquet retired the three Cubs batters he faced in his only appearance after the Orioles recalled him again.

Grant Wolfram is the only lefty in the bullpen, which again seems like a temporary arrangement.

The active roster has an opening and another one is coming with Blaze Alexander headed to the injured list with a fractured left hand.

Also, Double-A Chesapeake’s Luis De León was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week after tossing eight scoreless innings with two hits allowed Saturday in Akron.

The outing is the longest start from a Baysox pitcher since Mike Baumann’s nine-inning complete game against the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Aug. 14, 2019.
