The day-to-day status of Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo has expanded.
Basallo went on the 10-day injured list this afternoon, shortly before Game 1 of a doubleheader in Boston, with right shoulder inflammation.
The move is retroactive to Monday.
Outfielder Johnathan Rodríguez came off the taxi squad and was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk.
Basallo came out of the previous day’s game in Houston after injuring the shoulder on a swing in the second inning. He finished the at-bat, grimacing again on a bouncer.
Manager Craig Albernaz told the media at Fenway Park that Basallo was trending in the right direction but might not be available today.
“It’s going to be a TBD thing,” said Albernaz, who said earlier that the shoulder discomfort has been lingering.
The Orioles were concerned about making the injury worse by allowing Basallo to play through it.
Basallo is hitting .241/.305/.450 with nine doubles, a triple, 16 home runs and 46 RBIs in 86 games. He became the primary catcher earlier this season when Adley Rutschman went on the 10-day injured list with left ankle inflammation and later the seven-day concussion list.
Rutschman is on the 10-day IL again with left wrist inflammation, leaving the catching duties to Sam Huff and Chadwick Tromp. Huff is in the lineup for Game 1.
Rodriguez went 0-for-7 with three walks and four strikeouts in five games earlier this season. He’s slashing .270/.370/.391 with 14 doubles, four homers and 22 RBIs in 62 games with Norfolk.
The injured list has grown to 11 players as the Orioles try to win the series today and cut into their three-game deficit in the Wild Card chase.
