The Orioles managed to snap the Red Sox’s winning streak at 15 games in the nightcap of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Fenway Park, racing out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and never being threatened.

Now comes the hard part.

Building another long streak of their own.

A sweep in Houston gave the Orioles seven consecutive victories before losing twice to the Red Sox. They went into the off-day with a 50-53 record that put them 9 ½ games out of first place and three behind for the last Wild Card.

Three teams are ahead of them after the Twins moved past to wedge between the Mariners and Orioles. The Astros are only a half-game behind Baltimore after sweeping the Marlins.

The task doesn’t get any easier for the Orioles with the first-place Braves in town for a weekend series.

Atlanta has won six of eight and owns the third-best record in baseball at 60-42, along with a plus-106 run differential that’s also third. And Ronald Acuña Jr. could be activated from the injured list later today or Saturday.

A second left hamstring strain shut down Acuña on June 9.

The Orioles are moving in the other health direction with catchers Adley Rutschman (left wrist inflammation) and Samuel Basallo (right shoulder inflammation) on the 10-day injured list. That makes 11.

Besides both catchers, there’s also the 2026 and 2025 closers, the team’s hottest hitter who’s also capable of playing six positions, two members of the Opening Day rotation, a multi-purpose left-handed reliever and the presumed starter at third base.

Tyler O’Neill started Game 1 Wednesday and was removed early in the nightcap, but only because the Red Sox brought in right-hander Brayan Bello with two outs in the first inning. Colton Cowser replaced O’Neill in the third.

“That was my call,” manager Craig Albernaz told the media. “T.O. played the first game and then with the lefty (Eduardo Rivera) on the mound, getting him out in the first … Once you go up to bat against Bello, you have the lead, get (O’Neill) off his feet and also get Cowser out in center field to shore up the defense. That was the call.”

O’Neill has gone 6-for-15 with two doubles and four RBIs during a five-game hitting streak. He’s 10-for-30 with four home runs this month.

The Orioles saw three left-handed starters with the Red Sox, and none were Ranger Suárez. It won’t happen again with the Braves, and Albernaz will have to decide whether Coby Mayo or Christian Encarnacion-Strand get the majority of starts at third base.

Losing Rutschman and Basallo lessens the choices at designated hitter.

Encarnacion-Strand is finding new life with the Orioles, going 6-for-16 with two homers in four games.

The roster is going to look a little different later today because it holds only 25 players after Jonathan Rodríguez was optioned and designated for assignment. The Orioles finally seem ready to go back to the standard 13 pitchers, and Cade Povich could be the bullpen’s much-needed second left-hander after being on the taxi squad Wednesday.

Left-hander Trevor Rogers starts tonight after reducing his ERA to 4.28, its lowest since April 19. He’s allowed three runs in his last five starts totaling 30 2/3 innings, and nine runs in his last eight starts totaling 48 innings.

Rogers is making his 11th career start against the Braves after going 1-7 with a 4.81 ERA and 1.438 WHIP in 48 2/3 innings.

Brandon Young starts Saturday night and Shane Baz gets the ball Sunday afternoon.

Young has the lowest ERA in the rotation at 3.25, though Bradish (3.49) is gaining ground. He dominated the Astros again on Sunday by holding them to one run in seven innings.

Baz keeps chipping away at his ERA, taking it this month from 4.21 to 4.19 and 4.13. He’s posted quality starts in four of his last six outings, with two earned runs allowed and four total over six innings at Fenway Park.

The Braves are expected to start right-handers Grant Holmes, Bryce Elder and Reynaldo López. The Orioles caught a break because Chris Sale started yesterday against the Padres, struck out 11 in six innings and left with his ERA at 2.19.

The staff’s 3.68 ERA is third in the National League and seventh in the majors. The rotation has a 3.95 ERA, and the bullpen a 3.26 ERA that’s the lowest in the NL.

The 136 home runs from the Braves’ offense rank second in the NL and fourth in the majors. The 508 runs scored and .736 OPS are sixth.

*Caden Hunter started for High-A Frederick last night and allowed one unearned run and two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

Hunter, a sixth-round pick in 2025 out of USC and the No. 11 prospect in the system per MLB Pipeline, has a 1.60 ERA in 10 games with the Keys after posting a 1.17 ERA and 0.913 WHIP in six games with Class A Delmarva. He’s totaled 102 strikeouts in 68 1/3 innings.

Right-hander Twine Palmer was placed on Frederick’s injured list.
