Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias met with the media today for about 15 minutes before the Orioles took batting practice, and he supplied the latest round of injury updates.

They were the usual mix of good and bad news.

The worst relates to first baseman Ryan Mountcastle.

Mountcastle suffered another setback before playing in his first injury rehab game with Triple-A Norfolk.

Mountcastle pulled his oblique Tuesday afternoon, which halted his assignment before he started it. An MRI revealed “a pretty significant oblique strain,” Elias said.

“This is gonna be a couple of months, and it’s really unfortunate for Ryan to get all the way through a foot rehab, be ready to go out and start playing, and then have right as he’s starting another significant injury,” Elias said. “Unfortunately, we can’t expect him back anytime soon. We’ll get him back as soon as we’re able to, and hopefully that’s in 2026. But it’s a tough restart for Ryan.”

Mountcastle has appeared in only eight games after signing a $6.787 million contract with a $7.5 club option for 2027.

Adley Rutschman will begin hitting on Saturday as he continues his progression from an inflamed tendon in his left wrist. He could go on a rehab assignment next week.

Samuel Basallo is recovering from inflammation in his right shoulder. He’s started to throw and will hit in the next few days.

“We’re gonna get him back ASAP and hopefully that’s really soon,” Elias said.

Elias said trading for catcher Jake Rogers isn’t tied to any concerns about Rutschman and Basallo returning later this summer.

“Both of those guys are moving along quite well and we’re hoping to have them back quite soon,” Elias said.

“I think every game’s important to us and we saw Jake Rogers available on the market after the DFA from Detroit,” Elias said. “Veteran catcher, really well known for running a pitching staff, and we thought he’d be an upgrade in the short term, so we brought him in and he’s gonna be catching a lot here the next few days and help hold down the fort until one or both of those guys is back.

“Even when they are back, we’ve run a three-catcher roster quite a bit here. We also don’t know what the trade deadline’s gonna bring in terms of what the roster’s gonna look like, so it just makes sense for us to pick Jake up. But actually we’re quite hopeful that both Sam and Adley are back pretty soon.”

Closer Félix Bautista is throwing live batting practice in Sarasota and looks good, according to Elias. The team remains optimistic that he can pitch later this summer.

Blaze Alexander’s left hand is healing after he suffered a non-displaced fracture and the Orioles are optimistic that he can return by late August or early September.

Chris Bassitt impressed Wednesday in his first rehab game with Norfolk and could make two more starts before his reinstatement from the injured list.

Elias also said reliever Colin Selby underwent a “pretty significant surgery” Tuesday with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to repair his right labrum and rotator cuff and won’t pitch this season. The recovery will carry into the 2027 season.
