And now, it’s the bullpen.

A source confirmed that the Orioles have traded right-hander Tyler Wells to the Rays for minor league pitcher Michael Forret, who was in the organization until packaged in the Shane Baz trade in December.

The Orioles already are missing closer Ryan Helsley and left-hander Keegan Akin, and now they’ve parted with Wells. Helsley is recovering from his second bout with right elbow inflammation, and Akin underwent Tommy John surgery.

Wells was a Rule 5 selection from the Twins in December 2020 and filled a variety of roles in his six seasons. He made 50 starts among his 142 appearances, but none this year after returning from a second career ligament-reconstructive surgery in his right elbow. He recorded nine saves in a part-time closing role, including four this season.

Wells registered a 2.67 ERA and 0.963 WHIP this year in 43 games. He leaves Baltimore with a career 3.79 ERA.

The total output in 2024-25 consisted of only seven starts due to the surgery. The Orioles decided to use Wells exclusively out of the ‘pen this season, and 19 of his 22 outings since June were scoreless. He posted a 1.01 ERA during that span with three earned runs in 26 2/3 innings.

Kyle Bradish becomes the longest-tenured player on the active roster.

Forret, 22, was the Orioles’ 14th-round pick in the 2023 draft. He’s made a combined 19 starts between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham and posted a 3.29 ERA with 102 strikeouts in 93 innings..

MLB Pipeline ranked Forret as the Rays’ No. 8 prospect.

ESPN and the Tampa Bay Times were first with trade details.

Deadline day in major league baseball has produced three deals for the Orioles, beginning with outfielder Taylor Ward to the Mariners and followed by the biggie, catcher Adley Rutschman to the division-rival Red Sox.

Wells and Rutschman were under team control through 2027.

The Orioles just announced the Rutschman trade. They’ll receive a player to be named later or cash considerations, along with the three prospects and catcher Carlos Narváez. The Red Sox also get cash considerations.

*The Athletic is reporting that the Orioles acquired Triple-A outfielder Christian Franklin from the Nationals for Double-A Chesapeake pitcher Joe Glassey.

Franklin, 26, was the Cubs’ fourth-round pick in 2021 out of the University of Arkansas. He was batting .249/.375/.360 this year at Rochester, with 17 doubles, two triples, six homers, 39 RBIs and 17 steals in 93 games. He’s slashed .260/.389/.395 in five minor league seasons.

The Orioles will put Franklin on the 40-man roster.

Glassey, 25, had a 2.86 ERA in 22 relief appearances with High-A Frederick. He’s pitched twice with Chesapeake and tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

In three minor league seasons, Glassey has averaged 1.4 walks and 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings.
