The post-deadline Orioles resume their homestand tonight against the last-place Angels.
The roster needed some work.
The Orioles added catcher Carlos Narváez and outfielder Christian Franklin. They also recalled left-hander Cade Povich to start tonight. Outfielder Rece Hinds and right-hander Codi Heuer were optioned to Triple-A Norfolk yesterday.
Narváez came to the Orioles in the Adley Rutschman/Jake Rogers trade with the Red Sox. He’s catching tonight.
Franklin was acquired from the Nationals for Double-A pitcher Joe Glassey – the second trade between the two teams. Frankin, 26, hit .249/.375/.360 with 17 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 39 RBIs, 65 walks and 17 steals in 93 games with Triple-A Rochester. He owns a career .389 on-base percentage in five minor league seasons. Tonight marks his major league debut as the starting left fielder.
Dylan Beavers is leading off and playing right field. Christian Encarnacion-Strand is the cleanup hitter. Coby Mayo is at third base.
Povich has made four appearances with the Orioles, including three starts, and posted a 5.12 ERA in 19 1/3 innings. He went on the injured list May 8 with left elbow inflammation.
Povich had a 6.30 ERA in eight starts with Norfolk. His only career appearance against the Angels resulted in 3 2/3 scoreless relief innings.
Gunnar Henderson has a career 1.165 OPS against the Angels, his highest mark versus any opponent.
The Orioles began the day tied with the Tigers in the Wild Card race, 2 ½ games back for the final spot. Four teams are ahead of them. They’re 21-8 against the Angels since 2022.
The Angels haven’t won a series in Baltimore since May 2019. They haven’t won a series on the road since May 26-28 in Detroit.
Former Orioles first-round draft pick Grayson Rodriguez makes his return to Camden Yards after the November trade that brought Taylor Ward to Baltimore. Ward was traded yesterday to the Mariners.
Rodriguez has gone on the injured list twice this year. He’s made 10 starts and registered a 7.98 ERA and 1.750 WHIP in 44 innings.
Leody Taveras is 2-for-3 with a double and home run against Rodriguez.
Rodriguez and Eli Grba in 1962 are the only Angels pitchers to post a 7.98 ERA and .315 opponent average through the first 10 starts of a season.
The Angels won two of three from the Orioles in June, but they have the worst record in the majors at 43-69. They’re 18-36 on the road.
