It all starts with starting pitching.

Jake Arrieta was superb, blanking the Yankees on five hits over a career-high eight innings. He didn’t walk a batter and tied his career high with nine strikeouts.

Arrieta also tied Jason Hammel for the longest outing by an Orioles starter this season. Hammel lasted eight innings on April 8.

Update: Arrieta threw 111 pitches, 76 for strikes. Jim Johnson replaced him and retired the side in order in the ninth.

The Yankees never put a runner in scoring position.

Orioles starters registered a 1.33 ERA in this series, with three runs, 16 hits and 18 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings. The rotation has posted a 1.65 ERA and nine quality starts in the last 10 games.
