Jones is earning $6.15 million this season. He was eligible for free agency following the 2013 season.
The extension is for six years with a total value believed to be around $85 million. He’ll be the highest paid player in franchise history.
Update: The six-year deal is worth $85.5 million and includes a limited no-trade clause.
Jones entered today’s game batting .310/.353/.594 with nine doubles, a triple, 14 homers, 31 RBIs and 33 runs scored. He has a triple and stolen base today.
Executive vice president Dan Duquette expressed a desire to table negotiations until after the season, but he made an exception for Jones, voted Most Valuable Oriole last year.
Update II: The extension is six years, $85.5 million. Escalators are worth up to $6 million and can bring the maximum value to $91.5 million.
The contract includes a $2 million signing bonus, $8.5 million in 2013 (would have been final arbitration year), $13 million in 2014-15, $16 million in 2016-17 and $17 million in 2018. No option years. It includes a no-trade provision.
Jones is the second-highest paid center fielder in baseball.
