They didn’t slip out the back, but they definitely should have made a new plan.

A leadoff walk. A wild pitch. The catcher’s failure to block a ball in the dirt. The failure to catch a fly ball in shallow left field.

That’ll do it.

Brian Matusz walked Nick Swisher to begin the sixth, putting his 3-1 lead in immediate jeopardy. Mark Teixeira singled and a wild pitch move up both runners. Matt Wieters…I won’t detail all 50, but the Orioles covered a few of them in the sixth inning.

Alex Rodriguez lifted a sacrifice fly, and Teixeira – who took third as Nick Markakis made the catch flat-footed – scored when Robinson Cano’s fly ball fell between Felix Pie and Cesar Izturis.

Pie must have been playing Cano in the upper deck. It took him forever to enter the picture.

Teixeira was smart enough to drift toward the plate, rather than going back to tag up, and he raced home with the tying run.

Cano would have been on second if he dropped the bat and ran hard out of the box, but he assumed the ball would be caught.

That would have been a good idea.

Instant update: Brian Roberts delivered another run-scoring single in the seventh and ran into another out. He’s still in a lot of pain, but he’s given the Orioles a 4-3 lead.

Can they hold it?

Down on the farm, David Hernandez allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning in his second injury rehab appearance with Double-A Bowie, which was eliminated from playoff contention with a 4-3 loss to Richmond. Hernandez got two ground balls and a fly ball after striking out the side in his first game with the Baysox.
