The second base umpire ruled that Ty Wigginton’s foot came off the bag on an attempted force play. Wigginton got the out at first, but the Red Sox ended up with a runner, Jeremy Hermida, in scoring position.

Replays seemed to indicate that Hermida was out, and I fully expected Trembley to go ballistic. Or Earl Weaver.

I would have heaved second base and gotten my money’s worth, but I also have anger management issues.

Rhyne Hughes has reached base twice on a single and walk. Cesar Izturis is 2-for-2 while batting from the right side against Tim Wakefield.

So that’s the secret?

Brad Bergesen has struck out three batters in two scoreless innings at Triple-A Norfolk. He’s allowed a first-inning single to Charlotte shortstop Brent Lillibridge and has thrown 18 of his 25 pitches for strikes.

Michael Aubrey is starting in left field for the Tides.

Update: Make it four scoreless innings for Bergesen. He’s allowed three hits, including a double by Charlotte catcher Adam Ricks, and hasn’t walked a batter. He’s struck out three and has thrown 31 of 44 pitches for strikes. Bergesen has eight ground ball outs. No fly balls.
