“Sometimes you have a good day, sometimes you have a bad day,” he said through his interpreter. “Definitely, I had a terrible start today.”

Chen shied away from his fastball and got burned repeatedly with his breaking stuff.

“My fastball was not as good as the last couple of outings,” he said. “I couldn’t command all my pitches here. And today I was like, do my job. But I couldn’t do it and I hope I can…WASHINGTON – Wei-Yin Chen wrote off today’s start as “this is baseball.”

Chen tweaked his right wrist on a swing. Fortunately, he throws with his left.

“It was just hurting, my right wrist,” he said. “I’m still lucky that I can still pitch. When I swing, it hurts a little bit, but it didn’t bother me throwing pitches.

“It’s not a big deal. I just need a couple days rest. It didn’t bother me at all (pitching).”

Chen had a little trouble adjusting to the mound, but he said, “It doesn’t bother me. Today was all my fault because I couldn’t command my pitches. That’s it.”

Nats starter Stephen Strasburg homered off Chen after falling behind, 0-2.

“This is something I need to learn,” Chen said. “In Japan, pitchers can hit. But I just realized pitchers can hit here, and I made a big mistake here and threw a bad pitch.”

Chen struck out in both of his at-bats, spinning around once after swinging through a pitch.

“I still have a lot of room to improve,” he said. “I had a terrible day today. I am sorry I didn’t get the win for the team.”

Catcher Luis Exposito noted that Chen struggled to keep the ball down. And Exposito took some of the blame for the game-calling.

“He has great command,” Exposito said. “I think I might have called too much off-speed in that one inning. As time goes on, you get to start to know these guys and get into sequences with them. Unfortunately, I didn’t put down the right fingers today. We had a game plan going in and I just think we didn’t execute it the way we wanted to today.”
