Bergesen was strong in the first two innings before giving up three runs in the third.
“Obviously, I was able to go 1-2-3 for both those innings,” he said. “I felt pretty good, but I just wasn’t able to continue that. We get this one over with and we’ll come back tomorrow and hopefully we’ll get the win.
“There were some bloop hits and a couple chopper ground balls that got through, but they also hit a couple balls hard. It’s not one of those, ‘I’m going to sit here tonight and wonder do I need to change anything?’ I don’t think I need to change anything at all. The results just weren’t there for me tonight.”
Mark Worrell made his first major league appearance since 2008 and was charged with three runs on two hits and a walk. He entered with the bases loaded and didn’t retire a batter, including Dustin Pedroia, who doubled in an eight-run eighth inning.
“It’s a tough spot, but it’s spots I want to be in and I feel like I need to succeed in that,” he said. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. I need to pitch my way out of that.
“All I want to do is do my part and help us win ball games. I didn’t do my part today and it sucks.”
That seems like a good place to sign off. Sleep well.
