ARLINGTON, Texas – The Orioles conclude their series against the Rangers tonight after another round of roster moves, the latest aimed at reshuffling the bullpen.
Yennier Cano has returned from Triple-A Norfolk and left-hander Keegan Akin goes on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. The Orioles selected Corbin Martin’s contract from Norfolk and designated Matt Bowman for assignment again.
Cano was optioned June 22 after posting a 4.73 ERA and 1.388 WHIP in 32 appearances. He pitched twice for Norfolk and allowed one run in two innings.
Akin surrendered a game-tying, three-run homer to Adolis García in the 10th inning Monday. He allowed four earned runs and five total with nine hits in his last four outings over 4 1/3 innings.
Martin hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2022 with the Diamondbacks. The Orioles claimed him on waivers from the Brewers in May 2024 and he has 5.29 ERA in 29 appearances with the Tides.
Martin was a non-roster invite to spring training.
Bowman worked 1 2/3 innings last night and allowed four runs and six hits.
The injured list has grown to 14 players. Twenty-four have gone on it this season.
The Orioles remain seven games back for the final Wild Card with a 37-48 record. They fly to Atlanta later tonight.
Tomoyuki Sugano will try to get back on track after allowing 13 runs and 22 hits in his last three starts totaling 13 1/3 innings. He’s surrendered five home runs.
Sugano hasn’t faced the Rangers, but the Orioles are quite familiar with Nathan Eovaldi. He’s made 19 starts against them in the regular season and gone 8-3 with a 3.59 ERA in 102 2/3 innings. He allowed one run in seven innings in Game 3 of the 2023 Division Series.
Gunnar Henderson is 7-for-8 with a double against Eovaldi. Gary Sánchez is 2-for-17 with a home run and Cedric Mullins is 8-for-35 with three doubles and 10 strikeouts.
We're waiting to find out the results of Sánchez's X-rays after he was hit on the finger last night in the eighth inning.
Eovaldi missed a month this season with a right triceps tightness. He returned on Friday and allowed three runs and five hits in three innings against the Mariners.
Before the injury, Eovaldi tossed a complete-game shutout in Cincinnati and had a stretch with three runs allowed in 38 2/3 innings.
