The Orioles have switched starters today, with left-hander Keegan Akin serving as the opener. Chris Bassitt is expected to follow him.

Akin has made six relief appearances this season after his reinstatement from the injured list and allowed seven runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings. But six of those runs scored in his first game on April 25 against the Red Sox after he retired the side in order in the eighth inning. He didn’t record an out in the ninth.

Akin is making his 29th career start, with 17 coming in 2021.

Bassitt has a 5.91 ERA and 1.906 WHIP in seven starts. He’s registered a 4.20 ERA in eight career games (seven starts) against the Athletics.

Johan Heim is 1-for-12 with a double lifetime against Bassitt. Lawrence Butler is 4-for-6 with a double, and Zach Gelof is 3-for-9 with a double and home run.

Left-hander Trevor Rogers is eligible to return from the injured list on Monday and hasn’t heard whether he’s going on a rehab assignment or can rejoin the active roster. The Orioles haven’t listed their starters for the Yankees series that begins Monday at Camden Yards.

“I feel great,” said Rogers, who went on the injured list with the flu. “Everything’s where it needs to be. Body feels really good. Threw more of a simulated bullpen yesterday and the body feels really good, so I’m really happy with where everything’s at.”

Asked whether he might need to pitch for one of the affiliates, Rogers said, “As of now I don’t think so. Kind of play it by ear and go from there.’

Rogers added that there’s “a possibility” that he could start in the Yankees series.

“Talk with the coaching staff and go forward,” he said.

Rogers has struggled in his last three starts, allowing 12 earned runs and 13 total with 19 hits in 11 1/3 innings to raise his ERA to 4.75. He lasted only 1 2/3 innings against the Red Sox in his most recent start, with three runs and four hits surrendered.

“I felt great going into the off-day and then it went from zero to 100, and just not being there for the guys going through a big stretch of games sucks,” he said. “I got sick and I knew if I was pitching two days later, there would have been no way that I would have been able to do my job the way I wanted to, so unfortunately going on the IL was the only way of getting out of it. I’m just happy to get back with the guys and compete for them and try to help them win some games.”

Rogers said he hadn’t been this sick since maybe high school or middle school. He lost five or six pounds.

“It got me pretty good,” he said, “but we’re in a good spot.”

Lou Trivino has been designated for assignment less than a week after signing a one-year contract.

Trivino tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings yesterday in his second appearance with the Orioles. He was charged with six runs in two-thirds of an inning in his debut against the Yankees.

The Orioles signed Trivino on Monday to provide a fresh arm for the bullpen.

That assignment now falls upon Jose Espada, who was recalled today from Triple-A Norfolk.

The Orioles will try to avoid being swept today by the Athletics and falling seven games below .500.

Right-hander Luis Severino has registered a 4.15 ERA in eight starts, with 25 walks in 43 1/3 innings. He’s allowed one run in each of his last three starts totaling 18 2/3 innings.

Severino owns a 5.38 ERA in 15 games (13 starts) against the Orioles.

Gunnar Henderson is 7-for-9 with a double and home run against Severino. Adley Rutschman is 3-for-6 with a double.

The Orioles will face left-hander Ryan Weathers, right-hander Will Warren and left-hander Max Fried in the upcoming series.
