Robert Andino bounced a throw to first base while attempting to turn a double play in the bottom of the fourth, and Cody Ross raced home to break a scoreless tie.

Ross singled off Chris Tillman and took second when James Loney walked. With one out, Danny Valencia sent a ground ball to shortstop J.J. Hardy, who threw to second for the force. Ross singled off Chris Tillman and took second when James Loney walked. With one out, Danny Valencia sent a ground ball to shortstop J.J. Hardy, who threw to second for the force. Andino’s throw skipped off Mark Reynolds, who attempted another lunging catch while keeping his toe on the bag.

Reynolds ran down the ball as it rolled toward second and fired a perfect strike to catcher Matt Wieters, but Ross slid in safely.

Nothing good ever happens when you walk James Loney.

The run is earned because Daniel Nava followed with a single, the fifth hit off Tillman.

The Orioles still don’t have a hit off Red Sox left-hander Felix Doubront, who has walked two batters and struck out seven over four innings. Doubront has fanned four in a row and five of six.

Instant update: Lew Ford singled on the first pitch from Doubront in the top of the fifth, Chris Davis followed with a double off the Green Monster and Manny Machado blooped a single into right field to tie the game.

Apparently, the Orioles need a little adversity before the bats perk up.

Machado had three hits and two RBIs yesterday, and he’s got a walk and RBI single today.

The Orioles had runners on the corners with no outs, but they couldn’t take the lead. Doubront, taking advantage of the shadows, struck out Andino and Nate McLouth.

Update II: Troy Patton, making his first appearance since Aug. 12, retired the first two batters in the seventh before Scott Podsednik singled. Luis Ayala replaced him, and Machado made a sensational diving stop along the line and throw to retire Pedro Ciriaco. Highlight material.

Patton hasn’t allowed a run in 19 straight games and 14 1/3 innings.

Tillman allowed one run and six hits in six innings, with one walk and four strikeouts. He threw 107 pitches, 67 for strikes.

Tillman has surrendered two runs in his last two starts covering 12 innings. His ERA is down to 3.08 in 73 innings.

The Orioles are 10-4 when tied after the seventh inning.
