The Orioles are making a change to their rotation due to an injury.

Chris Bassitt goes on the 15-day injured list with lower-back discomfort. Trey Gibson is recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to make tonight’s start.

Bassitt has a 5.27 ERA and 1.633 WHIP in 12 games (10 starts). He exited Wednesday’s game after three innings due to tightness in his back.

Gibson will make his third career start and fourth appearance, and he’s working on regular rest tonight. He has a 3.65 ERA in 12 1/3 innings.

MLB Pipeline ranks Gibson as the organization’s No. 4 prospect.

Bassitt is the 20th different Oriole to land on the IL.

Emerson Hancock, the sixth-overall draft pick in 2020 out of the University of Georgia, has posted a 2.80 ERA in 12 starts after finishing 2025 at 4.90 in 22 games. The Orioles face him tonight.

Hancock also has a 0.948 WHIP in 70 2/3 innings. He’s walked 15 in 70 2/3 innings.

The right-hander has allowed two runs or fewer in nine of his starts, and five runs over 23 innings in his last four. His season began with six hitless innings on March 29 against Cleveland.

In Hancock’s only career start against the Orioles, he allowed one run and two hits with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings in Seattle on June 4, 2025. Adley Rutschman is 1-for-3 with a home run against him.

Cole Young has a 10-game hitting streak.

The Mariners are 34-32 and in first place in the American League West, 1 ½ games ahead of the Rangers. They’re 15-16 on the road after yesterday’s walk-off loss in Detroit.

They won eight in a row before dropping three of their last four.

The pitching staff has a 3.50 ERA that ranks second in the American League and fifth in the majors, and a 1.18 WHIP that’s second in the AL and fourth in the majors. The bullpen’s 3.15 ERA is second-lowest in the majors behind Atlanta’s 2.96.

Seattle has scored 51.1 percent of its runs via homers, the highest mark in the majors.

The Orioles went 5-1 against the Mariners last season, including a three-game sweep in Seattle. They’ve won six straight series against the Mariners and own the best record against them by any AL team since 2023 at 13-5, according to STATS.

The six series in a row is the Orioles’ second-longest active win streak after the White Sox at nine.
